York visit 2019

21st May 2019

After an early start with a 6.50am train! Year 5 made their way to the beautiful city of York for an exciting day out.  We wound our way through the ancient streets and came across the magnificent Minster - home of the Archbishop of York! After circling the Minster we discovered the pretty Shambles which is a world famous shopping street with so much character.  After that we reached the Jorvik Viking Centre built on the site of Coppergate when the foundations were dug for a shopping centre in the 1970s and 1980s.  The children loved the 'ride' back in time with the sights, sounds and smells of Viking York!  We learned about the craftspeople who made a living on this ancient street.

DIG our next stop-off was a chance to learn more about archaeology and literally 'dig' our way down to discover Victorian, Medieval, Viking and Roman artefacts.  We even got to handle real-life Viking objects including fossilised poo!

After lunch and an ice cream in the park we made our way back to the station and returned in the evening.  A great day out with a group of super children!
